How to Find Joy in the Little Things When Life Feels Hard
I've been thinking a lot lately about what it actually means to have a good life.
Maybe that's because I just had another birthday. Maybe it's because life looks a lot different than I once imagined it would. Or maybe it's because I've spent enough time waiting for things to get better that I'm realizing I don't want to miss what's good while I'm waiting.
The truth is, I don't have a lot of completely "good" days.
Living with chronic illness means there is usually something going on. Pain. Fatigue. An appointment. A flare. Something I wanted to do but couldn't. Something that took way more out of me than it should have.
And if I waited for a day when I felt great, got everything done, had plenty of energy and nothing hurt before I called it a good day...
I'd be waiting a long time.
Maybe for you it isn't chronic illness. Maybe you're going through grief, money problems, caring for someone you love, a relationship change, or just a season of life that feels heavier than usual.
Whatever the reason, sometimes waiting for life to feel completely good means we miss the good that's still happening in the middle of it.
You Don't Need a Good Day to Have a Good Moment
A day can be hard and still have something good in it.
Maybe it's drinking your coffee while the house is quiet.
Maybe your pet does something ridiculous that makes you laugh.
Maybe someone checks in on you at exactly the right time.
Maybe you finally accomplish something that's been hanging over your head.
Maybe you sit outside for ten minutes and the weather feels perfect.
Maybe dinner tastes especially good.
Maybe you finally get comfortable under your favorite blanket and find something good to watch.
None of those things magically turn a difficult day into an amazing one.
And I think that's important.
I'm not interested in pretending everything is wonderful when it isn't. Sometimes things are hard. Sometimes we're disappointed. Sometimes we're hurting. Sometimes life just isn't going the way we'd like it to.
Noticing something good doesn't erase any of that.
It just means the hard thing isn't the only thing that happened.
I've Spent a Lot of Time Waiting
I think many of us do this without realizing it.
We wait until we lose the weight.
Until we have more money.
Until the house is organized.
Until we're healthier.
Until work settles down.
Until the kids are older.
Until we can travel.
Until we finally get through whatever difficult season we're in.
Then we'll enjoy ourselves.
Then we'll do the fun thing.
Then we'll feel good about our lives.
But some seasons last a lot longer than we expect them to.
I've learned that one the hard way.
There are things I thought would be temporary that became part of my everyday life. There are things I still hope will change. And there are things I'm still figuring out.
I can hope for better while still looking for good now.
Those two things can exist together.
Birthdays Have a Way of Making You Think
I just celebrated another birthday, and birthdays have a funny way of making you look at your life.
Where am I?
Where did I think I'd be?
What do I want the next year to look like?
It's easy for my brain to immediately go to the things I want to change or the things that haven't happened yet.
But this past year I've been thinking about something different.
What if I paid more attention to what's already good?
Not in a forced gratitude kind of way. I'm not going to pretend a painful day was wonderful because I had a good cup of coffee.
But that coffee can still be good.
The conversation I had with someone I love can still be good.
Laughing at something stupid can still be good.
Getting out of the house for a little while can still be good.
Finding something I'm excited about can still be good.
A hard day doesn't cancel those things out.
Maybe We Need a Different Way to Measure a Good Life
We're really good at keeping track of what's unfinished.
The laundry that didn't get folded.
The thing we didn't accomplish.
The money we haven't saved yet.
The place we haven't traveled.
The project we haven't finished.
The version of ourselves we haven't become.
Those things are easy to see.
The little good moments are easier to miss.
Maybe a good life isn't made up of one long string of perfect days.
Maybe it's built out of thousands of ordinary moments that were good enough to notice.
The cup of coffee.
The inside joke.
The sunset.
The package on the porch.
The book you couldn't put down.
The person who remembered.
The pet curled up beside you.
The five minutes when you forgot about everything else and just laughed.
Those moments count too.
A Few Ways to Start Noticing the Good
You don't have to completely change your mindset or start pretending everything is wonderful. Sometimes it's simply about slowing down enough to notice the little things that might otherwise get lost in the day.
Pay attention to what makes you smile, even if it's something silly.
Give yourself something small to look forward to. A favorite meal, a new book, a drive somewhere pretty, your favorite show or coffee on the porch all count.
Let ordinary things be good enough. Not every good moment has to be a vacation, celebration or big accomplishment.
And when something does feel good, try to actually notice it before rushing on to the next thing.
Sometimes that's really all it is.
A hard day can still have a good meal.
A difficult week can still have a great conversation.
A rough season can still have moments when you laugh until your stomach hurts.
You don't have to turn those moments into anything bigger than they are.
Just let them count.
I'm Still Hoping for Better
I don't want this to sound like I've suddenly reached some magical place where I've accepted everything exactly as it is.
I haven't.
There are things I desperately want to feel better. There are things I want to do again. There are places I want to go. There are parts of my life I'd change tomorrow if I could.
I'm still hoping for better days.
I'm just trying not to overlook the good moments while I'm waiting for them.
Because this is my life too.
Not just some holding period before the "real" life starts again.
And I don't want to look back someday and realize there were good things happening all along that I was too busy waiting for something better to notice.
So as I start another trip around the sun, that's something I want to get better at.
Noticing the good.
Letting the little things count.
And remembering that I don't need an entire good day to have a good moment.
Maybe that's how we build a good life after all.
One good moment at a time.
What was one small good moment in your day today?
It doesn't have to be anything big. Maybe it was a good cup of coffee, a text that made you smile, five quiet minutes to yourself or something that made you laugh.
Sometimes we just have to stop long enough to notice it.
