When You Can’t Find the Words: Living with Chronic Illness and Feeling Misunderstood

When You Can’t Find the Words: Living with Chronic Illness and Feeling Misunderstood

The other day, someone shared something with me that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about.

They said something along the lines of…
“You have the words I used to be able to find before my illness.”

And that hit me in a way I didn’t expect.

Because if you know… you know.

There’s this part of chronic illness that no one really prepares you for.  It's
not just the pain, or the fatigue, or the appointments, but the quiet loss of being able to fully explain what’s happening inside you.

And the truth is… so many of us feel this, but we don’t always have the words to say it.

If you’ve ever struggled to explain how you feel because of chronic illness… you’re not alone. And if you’re looking for small ways to make your days feel a little softer, I’ll share a few things that have helped me along the way too.

💛 It’s Not Just Physical

Chronic illness doesn’t just affect your body.

It changes your routines.
Your energy.
Your identity.

The way your days look now might be completely different than they used to be.

The things that once felt simple… now take planning.
The things you used to do without thinking… now require energy you don’t always have.

And somewhere along the way, you start realizing…

this version of you is different.

Not worse.
Not less.

Just… different.

💛 Losing the Words

And then there’s the part that’s harder to explain.

The brain fog.
The moments where your thoughts feel just out of reach.
The feeling of knowing what you want to say… but not being able to get it out.

It’s frustrating.

It’s emotional.

And sometimes it makes you feel like you’re not fully you anymore.

Trying to explain symptoms to doctors…
Trying to help family understand…
Trying to put feelings into words…

…and it just doesn’t come out the way you meant it to.

So you simplify.
Or you stop explaining altogether.

Not because it doesn’t matter…
…but because it’s exhausting to keep trying.

✨ A few things that help on the foggy days…

💛 The Isolation of Not Being Understood

This is the part people don’t always see.

The quiet loneliness.

The feeling of repeating yourself…
or feeling dismissed…
or realizing that no matter how hard you try to explain it…

they just don’t fully get it.

And it’s not always anyone’s fault.

But it still leaves you feeling… alone in it.

Even in a room full of people.

✨ Comfort things for the harder days…

💛 Why Words Matter

But then something happens.

You read a post.
You hear someone share their story.
You come across words that make you stop and think...

“That’s exactly how I feel.”

And in that moment…

you feel seen.

You feel understood.

You feel a little less alone.

That’s the power of words.

Even when they’re hard to find…
when someone else finds them for you, it can feel like a breath of fresh air.

✨ When you can’t find the words, these help…”

💛 You’re Not Alone

So if you’ve been feeling this…

If you’ve been struggling to explain what you’re going through…
If you feel like you’ve lost pieces of yourself along the way…

I just want you to know this:

You’re not broken.

You’re not failing.

And you are absolutely not alone.

There are so many of us walking through this quietly, every single day.

And even when the words don’t come easily…

your experience is still real.

It still matters.

You still matter.

Even if you can’t always find the words…there are people out here who understand.

And if you need a place where you don’t have to explain everything perfectly…

you’re always welcome here. 💛

If this resonated with you, I’d truly love to hear your experience. You can share in the comments, or just know you’re seen even if you don’t have the words today.

And if you’re looking for a space where you don’t have to carry this alone…

In this together,
